The 2011 Chevrolet Camaro lineup gets more V6 power and a new convertible body style. General Motors’ iconic pony car is available as a 2-door coupe and a 2-door convertible. Camaro wears body styling inspired by the 1969 model. If the regular V6-powered Camaro lacks the horsepower you’re looking for, perhaps it’s time to take a look at the V8-motivated Camaro SS. The high-performance model first arrived at dealers in early 2009 as a 2010 model, with a sticker price of $30,995 - a figure that significantly undercuts the $39,320 Dodge Challenger SRT8.
The car is also considerably more affordable than the Mustang GT500, but the Ford is admittedly more powerful and exclusive.
Muscle cars have traditionally had bland interiors, but the Camaro laudably mixes retro touches like square gauge hoods and the available four-pack of auxiliary gauges with a modern dash design. However, this style comes with notable drawbacks. Most surfaces consist of hard, cheap plastic, and those retro gauges look as if they’re from a plastic toy. Worse, however, is the overstyled steering wheel that is seemingly not designed for human hands.
Visibility is also a significant issue, as the Camaro’s low-profile windows make it difficult to park and place in corners. The backseat, meanwhile, is the smallest in its class and doesn’t fold down to expand trunk space (though there is a pass-through). The 11.3-cubic-foot trunk (10.2 cubes in the convertible) itself is of a reasonable size, but its opening is so comically small that loading elongated items is an exercise in futility - golfers be warned.
The bright red drop top packed a 6.2-liter V-8 under the hood, all set up and ready to go once you check the SS box at your local dealer. In the test car, it was tied to a good six-speed manual transmission.
The top-level SS is motivated by a 6.2-liter V8. When coupled with the six-speed automatic transmission, the SS is good for 400 horsepower and 395 lb-ft of torque, while opting for the manual gearbox will net an additional 22 horsepower, for a grand total of 422 horsepower and 408 lb-ft of torque. The V8-powered car will return about 23 mpg on the highway. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, front-side airbags, and curtain-side airbags.
Other SS goodies include four-piston Brembo brakes, a sportier FE3 suspension and Competitive/Sport modes for the car’s StabiliTrak stability control system, including launch control for manual SS models.
Of note, GM claims the Camaro SS lapped Germany’s Nurburgring in 8 minutes 20 seconds. While not as blistering as the Corvette ZR1′s 7:26.4 second lap, it still puts the Camaro in some pretty decent company, such as the E46 BMW M3. However, the Camaro SS’ little brother - the 2008 Cobalt SS - made its way around the Nurburgring in just 8:22.
The big V-8 is happy to burble along the interstates until a burst of power is needed. Same for coping with big-city traffic. Wind noise isn’t bad with the top up or down. Top up, routine noise is well controlled.
Whether it is on back-country roads, or high-speed interstates, the SS is here to satisfy. With 20-by-8-inch “midnight silver” painted aluminum wheels and 245/25ZR tires up front, and 20×9 wheels and 275/40 tires in the rear, you’ll go looking for challenging on- and off-ramps.
Features include a wireless cell-phone link, USB port, satellite radio, and remote engine start. A head-up display is newly standard on the 2SS.
An RS appearance package is available on the SS, and includes HID headlamps with an integrated halo ring feature, spoiler and specific tail lamps.
