Volvo and Polestar release new S60 TTA touring cars - Volvo may not be the first name you'd think of in racing, but it stands as a dominant force in European touring cars. Before stepping up to the World Touring Car Championship last year, Volvo and its partner Polestar Racing had come to dominate the Swedish Touring Car Championship. While that series has since expanded to all of Scandinavia, Volvo made other plans in switching over to the TTA Racing Elite League. And this is the car with which it will be contesting the new series.

Rather than field the same C30 touring car which Volvo and Polestar had fielded in the STCC and WTCC, the TTA racer revealed here is based (or at least looks like) the S60 sedan. Under that carbon fiber body sits a 420-horsepower V6 driving the rear wheels through a six-speed sequential gearbox and boosted by a similar KERS regenerative braking system as employed in Formula One.

The livery has yet to be finalized, so for now Polestar has decked the S60 TTA out in the same shade of baby blue that makes its other touring cars, that 450-horsepower all-wheel-drive C30 prototype and for that matter the Alonso-era Renault F1 cars so perplexingly devious. While you think about it we'll tell you that Prokop told news reporters that he opted for the stove over an electric heater because he could keep former burning long after he turned off the car.
And why would he anyone choose to stay inside his car in Switzerland, we hear you ask? The answer comes from Prokop: "When I'm tired or have drunk too much, I want to sleep in the car."

Volvo Designer Imagines a P1800 Coupe for the 21st Century

The P1800 is by far the sportiest looking model ever to leave Volvo's production facilities - though to be precise, manufacturing began in the UK by Jensen Motors before Volvo moved production to Sweden in 1963. This year marks the 50th anniversary since Volvo introduced the coupe model to the world in 1961, and to celebrate the event, the Swedish firm's head designer and an avid fan of the P1800, Christopher Benjamin, came up with a sketch to show what a modern day version could look like.
Benjamin's proposal blends the lines and shapes of the original P1800 with the styling language of Volvo's most recent and future-telling study, the Concept You sedan that was displayed at the Frankfurt Motor Show this past September.
You can see the result in the pictures below. And for the record, Volvo has no current plans for a spiritual successor to the P1800.

Volvo only just introduced its Polestar performance program in the United States on November 7, yet the Swedish carmaker is already expanding its offerings to include the 2011-2012 XC60, S60 and XC70 models fitted with a T6 engine. The new T6 Polestar ECU upgrade package increases power from 300-horses to 325HP and peak torque from 324 lb-ft to 354 lb.-ft. on all three models. According to Volvo, the power increase does not affect the cars' average fuel consumption numbers.
"Just a few weeks after announcing the performance package for select T5 models, we have already received tremendous feedback from our customers," said Chris Dauerer, VCNA's vice president of customer service. "With Polestar, we are able to deliver our performance-minded customers the enhanced driving package they have been looking for now across a variety of our carline," he added.
Volvo's new software kit is priced at US$1,495 installed and will be available for order nationwide on December 5.
After the latest addition, the Polestar performance software package is available on most of Volvo's newest models fitted with the T5 and T6 engines (see the list below).
